Ebenezer’s Tavern was named after our founder and keeper of the Inn, Colonel Ebenezer Crafts, who entertained Revolutionary troops hearthside with culinary feasts and specialty drinks. As a tribute to the colonel, the atmosphere has maintained its 18th century ambiance adorning oversized wingback chairs, comfortable couches by the fireplace, and the vintage brass beer taps and rum barrels. Sample our jumbo crab cakes and home-made potato chips, or our traditional meatloaf dinner and old-fashioned chicken pot pie; generous portions are served up from our tavern-style menu.

The Country Motor Lodge offers 63 standard hotel rooms and overlooks the Publick House and is connected via private walkway and road to the Inn. Pet-friendly rooms are available in the Country Motor Lodge, and may also be available in limited quantities in the Tillyer House, based on availability. A pet fee is applied to any guest room with pets, unless the guest can provide documentation that the pet is a service animal. The Publick House has a strict NO SMOKING policy. Smoking in any guest room or indoor area (including tobacco, marijuana, and vaping or e-cigarettes) will result in a minimum charge of $250.00.

The inn nonetheless saw its business decline after a depression struck the young United States in the wake of the American Revolutionary War. Due to the financial constraints, Crafts was forced to sell his beloved inn and moved to Vermont, where he founded the town of Craftsbury. Now known only as the “Publick House,” the inn survived the depression to reemerged as a popular landmark in downtown Sturbridge.

Learning that it belonged to a local resident named Dr. Elisha Marcy, Crafts sought to acquire the parcel for himself. Dr. Marcy nevertheless refused Crafts’ constant overtures to sell the property. Undeterred, Crafts ultimately challenged the doctor to a game of “cards,” with Marcy’s landholdings used for collateral.
The magic of history is all over this place. The staff goes out of their way to assist guests. Food is excellent and the value cannot be beat. The Country Motor Lodge, just a short walk from the Main Inn and nestled in an apple orchard, opened in 1960.
By the beginning of the 20th century, the Publick House was unfortunately a shadow of its former self. The inn was even transformed into a boarding house for women called “The Elms” for a brief time, although it nearly closed down due to its dilapidated state. Fortunately, salvation arrived in the form of Richard Paige, who bought the entire complex for a single dollar amid a card game. Working alongside architect James A. Britten, Paige carefully restored the building back to its roots, which thus gave it a completely new lease on life.
